INTERVIEW | Johanna Härkönen

Girls, 2012

Johanna Härkönen is one of those creative people on whom it’s hard to put a label. She likes to look at her approach as “wrong” and intuition-based – something that has resulted in an impressive line of untraditional outcomes, brave and bold moves, and a very, very refreshing portfolio. We had a chat with Johanna about her way of working, her recent move to London, and her current involvement with Belgian fashion publication, A Magazine Curated By.

xsThe 13th issue of måg will be released on 31/8 2013. This issue is edited by Lisa Stålspets and is based on the concept of abjection.

We are proud to present Elna Hagemann’s video “Duet II” as a teaser for the upcoming issue. Hagemann often works with the idea of the body, the body as a zone of conflicts. As the director, Hagemann pushes her actors beyond the physically comfortable, she documents bodies put under pressure from outside, struggling from inside. The artist describes her videos as extended scenarios, stretched out in time, dissected and analyzed. She is interested in the relationship between the oppressor and the victim. “Duet II” is an intriguing video work that will be discussed in an interview featured in the magazine.

A feminist thread is seen throughout this issue.  - Ideas of the body as a means of control, identity, and a possibility. But also as an obstacle; the ambivalence between reality and dream, between abstraction and recognition.

Featured artists are Johanna Willenfelt, Marianna Uutinen, Elna Hagemann, Anja Carr, Marianne Bengtsson and Synnøve G. Wetten in a text by Joanna Lundberg. The issue includes a special text on Bodil Furu’s exhibition at Beaconsfield gallery ‘This bird has flown (ii)’ by its Director Naomi Siderfin.
